Epics display both in Roadmap and Kanban, or in neither

In my company-managed board, I can get Epics to display in the Roadmap *and* the Kanban board (by adjusting the Kanban board filter), or in neither. Is there a way to have Epics display only in the Roadmap, but *not* in the Kanban board? Thanks!

FYI: We just had the same question.  For me the solution was to add a `quick filter` to the board called `Hide Epics` with JQL `type != Epic`.  Users can then hide epics from the kanban with ease, without impacting the roadmap.

To add a quick filter:

  • Navigate to the board in question
  • Click the elipses (`...`) in the top right corner of the board
  • Click `Board Settings`
  • Click `Quick Filters`
  • Fill out the details for a new filter:
    • Name: `Hide Epics`
    • JQL: `type != Epic`
    • Description: `Don't show epics on the kanban`
    • Click Add
  • Navigate back to the board.  You should see a button saying `Hide Epics` at the top.  If you don't see this, refresh the page bypassing cache (i.e. hold down `CTRL` and tap `F5`). Click this button and the epics will be removed from your board, whilst your roadmap will continue to function.

I have my own answer to this!

Because it's a company-managed board, in Kanban Board Settings: drag tickets into the "Backlog" in the Columns section, which activates the Backlog feature. Doing this will then enable you to select an option to display Epics in the side panel on the Kanban Board, rather than inside the Kanban Board itself.
