External user management and User profiles

I'm working on setup of a JIRA serrver instance that is using Delegated LDAP Authentication and just discovered that users can't access their own profiles. I have some questions regarding this:

1. Is that really true or do I have some other underlying issue going on?
2. If it is working as designed, does that mean users can't update their profiles at all, including their name and avatar? Are we really fored to have an instance where everyeone is an egg? 
3. If it is by design, can I hide the profile option on the user toolbar? We've been in the cloud temporarily for a while and people are used to that working.
