Field configuration scheme - Hide fields using CLI

Is there a way to hide fields within a Field Configuration using CLI?

We have several fields that we no longer use and would like to hide them in all of our Field Configuration Schemes. Doing this by field/scheme is labor intensive.

No, not currently. There isn't any remote API support related to field configuration :(.

Has there been any change to the API in the last 7 years that might address this now (ability to use CLI to update/edit Field Schemes to hide fields)?
