Get timeline to calculate

Todd Marshall July 29, 2021

I am a new user of Jira. I am not following Agile for this project, just using it to create a schedule for tracking. I have figured out how to establish links between the Issues, but the times for subsequent Issues don't adjust when timing for prior Issues change. I have found pages that say to go to the Scope tab and to click Calculate, but I don't see Scope or any other tabs and I don't see a Calculate button to click  How do I get the schedule to recalculate whenever timing changes to any Issue.

Hi @Todd Marshall

any news on that? Did you tried to achieve your goals with any Automation rules?

Greetings.

Thank you for your attempt to help, but I am just not familiar enough with Jira. I was trying to create an Epic, but could not determine how to do so. I did go into Settings for my project and add Epic as a type, but when I then tried to create it, Epic was not on the drop down menu.

Our company has Jira licenses, but we don't have anyone with Jira expertise and nobody has received any training. I am working with IT to see if we can make arrangements for some training. But, at the moment I am not yet familiar enough with Jira to easily follow your suggestions. But, I thank you for your assistance.

Hi @Todd Marshall again,

I made the same project and here is what I found!

You have a Timeline on the left sidebar, where you can see all dependencies between the linked issues.

To change the due date based on another task can be possible with automation rule.

For the test purposes, I created an Epic and linked all my issues to it. The Epic task was with due date 01.09.2021 and all other issues were with previous dates.

To create an automation rule for changing dates according a Parent, (in my case Epic one) just do the following:

1. Go to the Project settings -> Automation

2. Create a rule as follows:

* New trigger -> Field value changed -> Due Date

* Conditions:

a) Issue fields condition -> Issue type is one of: Task, Subtask

b) Issue fields condition -> Due Date does not equal the Due Date from the Epic issue

* Actions:

- Edit issue

Copy Due date from the Epic issues.

Of course, you can change the trigger to priority or whatever do you need.

All other dependencies you have mentioned can be set up via Automation rules.

Here are some links, which might be useful for you:

Smart values - general

Smart Values - date and time functions

Use smart values to manipulate and format dates

I hope this was useful for you :)

Hi @Todd Marshall

Can you point some details, please? Are you trying to use Advanced Roadmaps in Jira or just the Roadmap of a scrum board?

Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

I will be looking forward to your reply!

I clicked Create Project. I selected Work Management and from there selected Project Management. From there I clicked Use Template and then created the project and completed the details. I am not trying to follow Agile for this project.

I then created Issues. I figured out how to establish links between the issues, but only the equivalent of the basic task B cannot start until task A is complete. I haven't yet figured out how to do staggered links such as task B cannot finish until 3 days after task A finishes. But, I created the basic links. However, the dates of dependent, or blocked, tasks do not change when the timing of prior tasks change.
