Getting error - 'A subtask cannot be assigned to Epic' when I move sub-task from triage to doing.

Kulbhushan Sharma October 15, 2020

I have defined a sub-task under a story, which is linked to an Epic. When I am trying to move my sub-task to 'doing', it is giving me an error: 'A subtask cannot be assigned to Epic'.  However, there is no field defined in the sub-task to link it back to Epic. Screenshot attached for workflow.

Hi @Kulbhushan Sharma  - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

It sounds like there might be a post function on the transition to Doing that is trying to link the issue to an Epic.

Or maybe there is some type of Automation that is trying to fire.

I would check the transition from Planning to Doing first to see what post functions are there.

Thank you, @John Funk. I am looking forward to your reply.

Hi @Kulbhushan Sharma currently, the Jira software "don't allow to map a Sub-task to an Epic", as the sub-task is part of parent.

It's always this way: Project>> Epic>> Story (epic & story map available) >> Sub-tasks (not linked to Epic).

Thank you for the reply, @G subramanyam . I know this linkage, hence I defined my deliverables as Epic >> User Story >> Sub-task (as you can't define task under a user story). The question here is how to make changes in the workflow or screen schemes to get this error resolved since we can't add an Epic link to the sub-task.
