How can I connect a SQL database of assets to a linked asset custom field/table of assets in Jira?

Hi,

My organization has an Applix database of assets based on SQL Server.  We're sun-setting the Applix application, but need to link its asset data to Jira so that we can continue to do upgrade quotes.  Which is the best option?  Import all assets into Jira and then manage them from there, or use some form of data connection to SQL server to keep the data there.   Eventually our asset data will most likely be in SQL connected to SAP.   I'm versed in the various connections, but do not understand the best approach for Jira to store, link, and manage this asset data.  All suggestions are welcome.  Thank you!
