How can existing releases in a project be used in a plan?

I have releases set up in a project and have assigned the relevant release in the 'Fix versions' field on stories within the project. These releases are not being shown in the releases for the plan. Are they two independent lists of releases?

I also tried creating a set of releases in the plan and these are the ones displayed in the 'Release' field column. I was hoping that these would be overwritten by the releases assigned to the stories in the 'Fix Version' tag.
