How do I add a custom field to a company managed project in Jira?

neha.tripathi May 8, 2023

I need to make visible and available a custom field for a project in Jira.
I have seen that there is a field:
Environment
but I cannot include in our template.

Please share how to do that

Hi @neha.tripathi ,

You can go to Project Settings > Summary > Screens. Click on the Screen Scheme associated with your issue type. Under Screen Scheme, select the required screen and then add the Environment field here.

You can also add fields as mentioned in this doc.

Thanks,
Aditya

Hi Aditya,

Thank you for your answer.

Who has to do the above mentioned steps:

1. Atlassian instance Admin (company instance) or

2. Jira Project Admin ?

If the screen is not shared with other projects, Project Admin will be able to add fields to the screen else product-admin.

Hi @Aditya Verma

are you perfectly sure about that? I'm currently testing, but I don't see any option to add fields unless I'm a product-admin.

I'm a site-admin for a Jira Cloud Enterprise instance and I'm testing with a test-user.

The test-user's setup:

  • I have a company-managed project
  • I'm not an owner of this project, but I have the project role Administrator
  • Permission to administrate the project is granted to the Administrator-role (as well as all other permissions)
  • There's a Kanban Default and a Kanban Bug Screen configured for this project, both only used by this project

Under Project Settings > Issues > Screens I don't have any option to edit the screens in order to add fields.

Also under Project Settings > Issues > Layout there's nothing to be added for me. I can drag and drop existing fields to the "Hidden fields" section on the right, but I don't see an option to add any other global fields.

Do you see anything I am missing in my configuration?

I'd love to enable our project-admins to add fields to their projects on their own even in company-managed projects.

Thanks and best regards,

Stefan

Hi @Stefan Draber ,

The available fields for an issue type are the ones added in the global screen configuration for viewing that issue type. Hence, if you want to add a new field to your screen, you would need to request Jira-Admin to add the field to the global screen. Then Project Admin will be able to Hide/show that field from the layout section.

Since Original requester of this question had site admin access, I suggested the steps as per that in my first comment. I will modify my 2nd comment to avoid any confusion for the community members.

Thanks,
Aditya
