How do I amend JIRA's user story template to my own?

Ian Court

Hello,

I have created my own version of a user story template with additional information in the "Description" field.

How do I change the JIRA user story ticket to always pick up my template whenever a new user story is created?

Thanks,

Ian

Hi @Ian Court ,

Great question! Yes, you can create Jira automation rules manually or define "Description" template for Team-managed projects.

But to make things easier - feel free to try out our free app Easy Action Items. It helps you automatically apply Description field content, checklists, and streamline your automation rules - no coding required.

If you're looking for a more advanced setup - including multi-issue templates, hierarchy support, and deeper Jira integration - check out our Easy Issue Templates app. It’s ideal for teams managing larger projects or needing scalable, customisable templates.

Let us know if you’d like a quick demo or help getting started!

Best,

Paul

Hi @Ian Court   ☺️, If you're open to using a third-party app for your cloud instance, I think Templating.app could be a good solution for this.

  • You can easily create story templates with a predefined description that loads automatically based on your desired conditions.

This is how this might look like:

Hi Ian,

You can use Automation to apply changes to your work items on-the-fly on events such as Work Item Creation:

Alternatively, you can use 3rd-party apps from Atlassian Marketplace that are providing templating capabilities to Jira.

We are the ones behind Issue Templates for Jira Cloud.

Hope that helps!
