How do I paste a text formatted table into a JIRA task?

Our company recently changed from the old version of JIRA to the cloud version.  The new version does not recognise the | old | markdown | approach | to | tables |:

|| Heading | datum | datum | datum |
|| Heading | datum | datum | datum |
etc.

Not supporting this is a colossal pain in the rear!  We have a number of internal apps that generate output in that old format that we could simply paste into JIRA task comments.  I have wasted a few hours now trying to find out out how to do this in the shiny new version and have drawn a blank.  The closest approach I have found seems to be to (1) generate the data in a CSV format, (2) manually dump that data to a temporary file, (3) pray that the shiny new JIRA will import the CSV file.

That can't be right, can it?  It's an absurdly cumbersome way to work.  For now we are falling back to pasting in the old markdown table data as "code blocks", which look as ugly as sin.  Please, I would be so grateful if you can tell me there is a sensible solution here.

This seemed to work for me when copied from Notepad++ into the browser.

heading 1 | heading 2 | heading 3 |
--- | --- | --- |
| Cell a1 | Cell a2 | Cell a3 |
| Cell b1 | Cell b2 | Cell b3 |
