How do you manage your user stories before they reach a definition of ready status?

We have user stories that are sitting in our backlog and require more work before they reach the definition of ready to be included in a sprint.  The types of work that are done on stories before they reach the definition of ready could include requirements definition, product owner review, etc.  

We currently have one Scrum Master who uses Fix Version for tracking because it allows her to drag and drop her stories whereas Component does not, and Labels can be used or change by anyone.

We need to standardize our Fix Version usage so we can track releases.

Does anyone have any suggestion for how we do this?
