How does access to the Jira Plans feature work?

I've found plenty of documentation about how to adjust view/edit permissions once you have a Plan.

The question is about how users are granted access to any Plans functionality specifically.

We have users who have been operating otherwise fine in Jira and seem to have all other necessary functionality but can't see Plans. It isn't on their navigation and they can't open links to Plans, even after they have been added as a Plan editor!

The closest answer I've found is this one from 2022 that says they need to be added to jira-software-access, but I know a lot has changed since then.

Edit: removed unnecessary info about specific user groups

Is there another settings/access menu I haven't found?

Hello @Casey Gould

There are separate permissions for access to Plans. You get to them through the Plans > Settings > Permissions option, or you can navigate there directly with this URL (and your own Jira instance base URL)

https://yourJiraBaseUrl/jira/plans/settings/permissions

That will take you to a page where you will need to grant user groups access to the Plans feature.

Example:

The users will also have to have access to the source material of the individual Plans; i.e. Projects, filters, and boards.

Thanks, @Trudy Claspill! The URL was perfect.

I'd seen the page but wouldn't have guessed that feature access was under "Find out how to change permissions in your plan" -- I wish the documentation made a distinction between IN the plan and TO Plans, since those are two different sets of permissions in different locations.

Hello,

Welcome to the community :)

Plans has a separate permissions model from that found in the rest of Jira.

The levels of access for plans are:

  • Plans administrator

  • Plans shared team management

  • Plans user

  • Plans viewer

Please check this article : https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/plan-and-view-cross-project-work-with-advanced-roadmaps/

This has all the details on how plans works and their permissions etc

In order to edit work items in plans, users need to have project permissions as well.

See limit who can view your plan based on individual users or user groups.

Thank You,

Prachi

Hi, was there a specific article you think would be helpful from the first link? It takes me to a directory of several.

Hey @Casey Gould

In addition to Prachi's response, you can also apply restrictions at an individual plan level.

This configuration is available under Plan Settings > Permissions. Here, you can restrict editing and viewing permissions for the plan to specific users.

Thanks!
