How to build drop down Filter on the Board view ?

Tim Bohnensteffen May 15, 2025

Hello,

i am currently trying to build filters into the boards we currently using.

We created a custom field called "marker" which contains around 10 labels.
This is to restrict the creation of new labels which is not possible with the labe field.

On the board show up a label filter option where you can select the labe in a dropdown to filter the Work Items on the board. Would it be possible to configure such a dropdown to filter for the custom field content an other option then creating a ton of quick filter ?

Happy to hear your ideas!
Tim

Hello @Tim Bohnensteffen

Thanks for reaching out to the Atlassian Community.

Currently, Jira does not natively support creating dropdown filters for custom fields directly on the board, like the ones available for Epics, Labels, or Versions. The existing functionality allows for quick filters, but these need to be manually created for each value you wish to filter by, which can indeed become cumbersome if you have many values.

As a workaround approaches you can consider below:

  1. Quick Filters:

    • You can create individual quick filters for each value of your custom field. While this is not as dynamic as a dropdown, it allows you to filter by specific values. To do this, navigate to your board settings, select "Quick Filters," and create a filter for each value using JQL (Jira Query Language).

We do have a few Feature requests for the same, Please feel free to take a look and comment, mentioning your use case.

Allow user to configure Quick Filters that provide dynamic filtering by value for a particular field

Quick filters which displays a drop-down for each value for a field

Let me know if you have any questions!!!!!

Thank you for the quick response. Than i have to wait that dynamic Quick Filter gets integrated.
