How to copy Project Field to a Global Field

Hi all. 

We've made some fields in a Jira Discovery project and want to make them global fields. The article below "Migrate values from a project field to a global field" gives 4 steps to doing this - is Step 4 correct? 

I can "copy values" from the project field, but how do you get them to populate a global field? Any help would be great, thank you!

The instructions say you have to create the global field first, then apply it to your JPD project and then that field becomes a custom field that can be applied to any other project.

I think, what you are trying to do is you have a custom field in your JPD already and you are trying to make it global?  I don't think that's possible.  You have to create the global field first as per the instructions.
