How to download the attachments of all tasks at once

Shrilekha Behera July 29, 2019

We need all the attachments of each and every task of Jira application. Is there a way to download all the attachments at once and save it in a place?

Jira application which has all the tasks will not be available to us after 31 July 2019 as customer has provided their own Jira. Please reply.

For Cloud, you have two choices.  Download a full backup of the system which will contain all attachments, or click on each thing you want to save (although I would do that with a script that downloads the files via REST rather than manually clicking)

We took a backup of a project from Backup manager-> Back up for cloud in JIRA settings.

But we do not have access to view them.

The backup function gives you a file for download.

Shrilekha Behera July 30, 2019

Where shall we find the option to download the file. We could not find any file for download while we were taking the backup from Backup manager-> Back up for cloud in JIRA settings. And in what extension does the file will be downloaded. Please reply.
Can you provide any contact no. to discuss on how to do it.

When you run the backup, it runs for a while and then leaves you on a page with a "download" button on it.

Could you explain what you are seeing (or rather, what you're doing differently)?

Shrilekha Behera July 30, 2019

In "Import and Export" option of JIRA Settings, there are below two options:

1. Backup Manager
2. External System Export

Can you clarify which option should we select so as to find the download button?

Backup manager, select "create backup" and you will be given the "download backup file" when the file has been generated.

Shrilekha Behera July 30, 2019

When we select Back up for cloud it is not showing any option to select a particular project to download. We want the backup of particular projects which we are using not all the projects. Can you suggest how to do that?

No, you can't do it.  This is a full backup of everything.

There is no "project backup"

Shrilekha Behera July 30, 2019

When we tried to take the full backup by selecting Back for cloud, a zip folder was downloaded but we are not able to unzip that folder to verify if all the files with their ticket has been downloaded. Can you suggest how to see those files?

It's a standard .zip file.  What does "not able to unzip" mean?  Errors?

Shrilekha Behera July 31, 2019

Attached the screenshots of downloaded zip and the error we are getting while we try to unzip it.

Shrilekha Behera July 31, 2019

As you can see in the above attachments the zip file downloaded is of size KB but as we discussed earlier it should be the full backup of all projects. When we tried to extract the zip folder, it is showing error that the folder is empty. I think the whole files are not downloaded completely.

And when we tried to take the backup again system is not allowing to do it.

Communicating through chats is taking long time and it is an urgent requirement for us to take the backup so can you share any contact no. to discuss.

Could you use a proper zip program to check the download?  This is working fine for me, but I don't use the crummy option built into Windows.

Did you tick the "export all files" (t specifically asks about attachments)?

It won't let you more than one backup every 48 hours (last time I checked it was 48 hours), to prevent people overloading the servers.

Finally, this is not chat, or support, this is a forum full of end-users of Atlassian software (including, of course, Atlassian, and partners).  I'm not sure direct contact would be any faster or better for you, as we can only tell you what I'm saying here anyway.

Shrilekha Behera July 31, 2019

Below are the steps we followed:

1. In the Backup manager, we selected Create Backup for cloud in "Backup for Cloud" section.

2. Then we got the link for "Download backup file" link at the bottom.

3. We hit the Download backup file link and the "Jira-export.zip" was downloaded.

And when tried to extract the zip the above error displayed.

Can you mention all the steps to take the backup and also to view all the files that were downloaded.

  • Go to the backup manager
  • Make sure "include additional files" is checked (it is by default)
  • Select either backup for Cloud or Backup for Server (you have to use the Cloud one if you have NextGen projects)
  • Download the .zip file it links to after export
  • Unzip that using a zip utility

I've just gone through this with a client, this morning.  We got a perfectly valid zip file with all the attachments in it (although as a server download, the names are in the database so there would be some translation to do if were extracting them rather than moving to server)

Shrilekha Behera July 31, 2019

Now we are able to extract the "Jira-export.zip". We are able to see the attachments folder consisting of files of all the tickets. But can you tell us how to open the files present inside the attachment folder?

Shrilekha Behera July 31, 2019

Can you please reply my above query.

Shrilekha Behera July 31, 2019

Attached the screenshot of the extracted files for reference.

Each file is a binary copy of the attachment.  You'll need to read Jira to work out what each file's original name is.

I am worried about why you are doing this.  There is no good reason I can think of to try to read attachments this way.

Could you explain why you are doing this, so we can maybe give you a less complicated or better way to achieve your goal?

Shrilekha Behera August 20, 2019

Jira application which has all the previous tasks is now no more being used by our customer as they has provided their own Jira. But to get a history of the previous tasks we need the back up.Thats the reason why we were taking back up of the attachments.
Can you suggest if these can be imported in the JIRA application which we are using right now.

The best thing to do is get the download, then import it into an empty Jira Server which you can licence once for 10 users and then forget it (let the licence lapse, it will keep working).   This will be easier than extracting data and reformatting, and you will still be able to see a complete history as it was created, not just blocks of files out of context and with useless names.

HI, if you are using JIRA Server, you can download all attachments in the file directory

Shrilekha Behera July 29, 2019

How to know whether I am using JIRA server or not ? And if not then how to download the files apart from using JIRA Server?

Look at the link if it contains .atlassian.net then it is Cloud.

For cloud you can install the plugin https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1220266/bulk-attachment-download?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

and the server https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1211093/download-attachments

Shrilekha Behera July 29, 2019

I have admin privilege in JIRA. But still I am not able to install the plugin for cloud. I am getting the below message:

"Only site administrators can start trials for paid apps, and unfortunately, you are not one of them. Contact your site administrator to start a trial for this app".
