How to exclude certain custom fields from being copied when cloning issues in Jira Cloud?

In our Jira Cloud instance, we often use the Clone option to duplicate issues. However, some custom fields (for example: AI Coding Agent and AI Actual Effort) are being copied over during cloning, which we don’t want.

I understand that Jira Cloud’s native clone action copies most fields by default, and there isn’t an option in the UI to exclude specific ones.

What we’re looking for is a way to ensure these custom fields are either:

  • Not copied at all during cloning, OR

  • Cleared immediately after cloning.

@Sudarsana G Welcome to the community!

There are couple of ways..

1. If you are cloning using workflow post function then on the cloned ticket workflow you can add post function to clear that spefici field values.

2. If you are cloing using the jira cloud automation then u have the option to which custom field values that need to be copy Or also you can another branch where you can select the most recently created work item and then clear taht field value.

Hi @Sudarsana G

Native cloning in Jira Cloud can be quite limited and requires workarounds for specific use cases.

I can suggest trying our app Elements Copy & Sync which was designed to simplify and customize issue cloning.

You will have the ability to decide which fields should be copied and which not (here your custom fields).

Don't hesitate to check the documentation, it’s really quick and easy to set up.

The app is for free during 30 days (and it stays free under 10 users).

Hi @Sudarsana G

If you are willing to try a marketplace app to clone your issues, our app Deep Clone for Jira could help you.

With Deep Clone, you can clear fields of the cloned issues:

  1. Open Deep Clone via More (•••) → Deep Clone.
  2. In the dialog, enable Edit fields and click Open Field Editor ✏️.
  3. Add your custom fields (e.g., AI Coding Agent, AI Actual Effort) and set them to be cleared.
