How to include my new column status into burn down chart?

Sean January 8, 2024

Hi Atlassian Community,

I have amended my kanban board column to include a new status called Ready for Demo. This column has a Ready for Demo status, right before the Done column. Please see attached screen shot below.

When issues are transitioned to Ready for Demo, I would like the story points to be burned in the burndown chart. Currently, it is only burned when it is moved to Done column. How can i change the setting so that my burn down chart is updated when the card is in the Ready for Demo column?

The burndown chart will likely be based off the issue being in a “Done” status (one of the green ones), so you’d have to redefine what your definition of done is.

Edit: I had a brain freeze - it’s the right hand column on the board. The board is the view on top of the workflow and the right most column gets turned “green” regardless of its status category in Jira.

Hi Sean,

Yes, therefore logically it should be burned when issues are in Ready for Demo column, as it is a "Done" status. However, my points are burned only when the card is shifting to Done Column.

Ready for Demo Column is part of the team's DoD. When an issue is shifted to Done (the right most column), it means the PO has accepted the story.

Hope this further clarifies

Ah ok. In which case it’s using your right most board column.

I generally wouldn’t advise a 2-step done process like that - is the issue that your PO can’t review them quickly enough in the sprint or that you don’t review them all until the end of the sprint?

The burndown is always based on the last column, and the last column only.

The status category and resolution are utterly irrelevant.  An issue is only "done" for the team if it is in the last column on their board.

You're right, Nic (of course), for the board and the sprint burn-down with regards to the right-hand column.

So you could create your sprint board with a rightmost column of ready for review - if that’s your team definition of done - and then have the PO go into each story and use the issue screen workflow buttons to move them to done. As Nic rightly reminded me the workflow can extend beyond the confines of the board that’s a “view” on top of it with its own board concept of done that’s unrelated to the underlying workflow done.

The team will do a formal review at the end of the sprint. That's when we ensure DoD has been met, and if PO accepts the feature, PO will move to done.

I agree with what you and Nic has mentioned above. Will be looking to make some changes and gather feedbacks from the team.

Thanks!
