Can anyone tell me how i can make my custom text field editable inline in List view? Currently when i click on the field it automatically opens the issue form and forces me to edit the field there which takes more time.
I tired Project Settings > Work Type > Task , but couldn't see a way to edit the field to make it editable.
My project is Team managed. Its a personal account and i have all privileges.
thanks
Hi @Josh Smith
I would strongly assume that your field is a Paragraph/multi-line text field, which cannot be inline edited in Jira's various built-in list views. (The same goes for the Description field AFAIK.) It should work for single-line text fields - however note that these can't have rich formatting, and are limited to 255 characters.
As an alternative, if you're open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, you have more options available. E.g., you may want to have a look at the app that my team and I are working on: JXL for Jira.
JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your work items (issues) that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting, and filtering by all your work item fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets. It also comes with a range of advanced features - including support for (configurable) work item hierarchies, work item grouping by any issue field(s), sum-ups, or conditional formatting - and works across any number of projects.
Plus, it can be configured to edit multi-line text columns in a "semi-inline" way, like so:
Note that this is interaction is "keyboard only" - so navigating and editing a whole number of work items (which I assume is what you're looking for) is as quick and easy as it can be. (You can, of course, also interact with cells by clicking them, just like you'd do in Excel or Google Sheets.)
Any questions just let me know,
Best,
Hannes
When the field was created was it created as a short text field or a paragraph text field? A short text field can be edited inline, a paragraph field will open the issue form.

It was imported from Clickup. In clickup its a Long Text Area.. so probably thats why, yeah.
In Jira, how many characters max. can a short text field be? Is there a way I can convert the long text field to a short text field? Or copy the long text data over to a short field from all my tasks?
Is the default "Description" field a long text field? Could I use that instead if is can be listed in List view?
