We're in a similar issue as many others with a mix of similar labels, maybe some capitalised, maybe some with typos - but we cannot delete them on our Next Gen project.
There are no tickets in our Next Gen using these labels yet we cannot delete them. Whenever we add labels to new tickets we see numerous stale or erroneous labels.
There must be a way to tidy this up in Next Gen projects?
thanks
Hello Simon, you can do a "bulk change" and remove all those labels.
Filters --> Advanced Search --> project = "Test Next Gen" --> ... --> Bulk Change all Issues --> Choose Issues --> Next --> Edit Issues --> Change labels
Hiya.
Thanks for your help. But that won't remove the Label definition as far as I can see. It's the actual definitions I would like to clear out so in future they cannot be used. These instructions just remove the duff labels from tickets?
In classic projects, this was an easy operation.

Ah, sorry that I misunderstood your question. So according to how to delete a label
to completely delete a label from a JIRA instance, the label must be first removed from all the issues in that instance (for which you need to perform a bulk edit) Once it is removed from all issues, it will no longer be seen when browsing a labels.

OK, so I did read that. Is it possible that includes issues from other Projects too?
Because I can confirm that this is not working as you describe, sorry. I followed your instructions and unfortunately set the labels on every single one of my 654 tickets in that project (open and closed) to the Labels that I wanted to keep!
But when I go to any ticket and go to the Labels, I still see all the duff Labels.

Hi Simon,
You are right: Labels in Jira are global, meaning that if you see some labels that you do not use in your project, they come from another project. That even includes projects you cannot even access yourself.
This typically is not much of an issue if you are an admin and can do bulk updates on all issues in every project. It's quite a nuisance, if you are a project admin and have to get an admin to do the work for you.
If you are open to an app-based solution, there is Project Labels that aims to bring control over labels to the project level. I am on the team that created this app am happy to help, if you interested.
Hope that helps,
Oliver

Thanks, Oliver. and thanks Sachin, too.
That really doesn't seem like a great design for Labels. Even as an admin, I can't get around these UI issues with JIRA, and especially with JIRA Next Gen. There must be 30-40 projects on our Cloud and I don't expect to be polluted by them. This is yet another nail in the coffin, sorry JIRA.
