How to rename usernames and email id of Jira users in a most effective way?

Hi All,

After an acquisition, we are bound to change the usernames in JIRA as per the new convention. For Mark Wright the previous username was 'mwright' and according to the new standards it should be 'wrightm'. we have to rename the username for 3000+ users.

Que1) Is there any way to do it apart from a manual edit?

Que2) Can it be done through db? on the basis of name can we override the usernames on databse?

Que3) What can be the side effects of editing the usernames in Jira?

One answer to Que3 is discussed here. Basically, the work logs break when you rename a user in JIRA. It may be possible to fix via DB edits (discussed in a link on the ticket), but it is inherently risky.
