How to send a hipchat notification to assignee only?

We want to send a hip chat notification to the assignee instead of a message to a whole room. Can this be done?

Assuming you want to notify the user on HipChat, (not use HipChat's feature of say, emailing a person when offline), then it looks like you cannot use the integration to a named person, but of course you can create a room, public or private, for the person and send notifications to that room.  Note, that private rooms require a verification before you can configure.  it seems sometimes the javascript to invoke the api.HipChat page might not always be responsive. I've had to try several times to get the verification dialog to appear.

Richard is right, it is not possible to send a personal message to the assignee. The notifications can only be send in a room. The workaround is to create a room with only one person inside, but it is quite cumbersome.

In the future we might consider expanding the possible scenarios to allow personal notifications functionality but unfortunately it is not something we have planned in a short term.
