How to set/read group description via REST API?

The web UI allows a group to have a description - you can set the description via the UI and see it displayed in the UI.

However, I cannot find a REST API call to either set the description or return it.

Is this possible via REST? If so, can someone explain how?

Reading your query I am not sure whether you wish to update description field value on an issue or you have some other use case. Id you can share more on the Use case , may be we can try to look for the information you want.

I wanted to update the description field on a group.

However, it doesn't look like Atlassian support this, not even on the new admin APIs.

Never mind.
