Hi!

I would like to use Jira Software or Jira Work Management instead of Trello.

I have already tried different options to build my own boards in Jira, however I have not managed to adjust the board as I needed.

I would like to set up easily exchangeable task lists per project instead of workflow stages per project so that I would be able to create task in each vertical list. For example, I would like to have a project with a "year board" consisting of 12 months (i.e. lists) which are workflow independent (see the screenshot attached). Currently I cannot create a task at any workflow "stage", I can create a task at the first stage only which is a "TO DO" (or an "OPEN") stage. Basically, each such "monthly" list is supposed to be equal to "TO DO" stage.

Is there any chance to implement the said idea and how?

As a solution to creating a Trello-like board in Jira, I'd like to highlight our app "Buckets for Jira" which addresses exactly what's being sought in the original post:

  • Creation of flexible boards with custom buckets (columns), similar to Trello

  • Simple drag-and-drop of issues between buckets, independent of workflow status

  • Categorization of tasks by any criteria, perfect for monthly lists

Our app was designed to overcome the limitations of standard Jira boards, providing the desired Trello-like flexibility while maintaining all the benefits of Jira and functioning just like the familiar Jira boards.

Maybe that helps :)

Hello @The Winner I am

Welcome to the community.

Jira board columns are based on the Statuses in the workflow for the issues. That is a fundamental concept of boards in Jira.

Do you not have the need for those issue to move through Statuses like To Do, In Progress, and Done?

An alternative to having your columns be lists of tasks by month, you could add a custom numeric field to your issues. In that field add a number that represents the month in which the tasks are to be done. Then you can specify that the Swimlanes for the board be set to that custom numeric field. That would show all the tasks for a given month in a swimlane, and also allow you to progress the tasks through statuses across the board.

That Swimlane option is available only in Jira Software projects that are Company Managed. It is not available in Team Managed project nor in Jira Work Management projects.

To force Jira to do what you want you would need to create a workflow that uses your "months" as the Statuses in the workflow.

There may be other options that involve third party products.
