I want to bulk edit JIRA based on excel sheet provided

Suman, Shekhar June 12, 2024

I want to bulk change multiple JIRA issues based on excel sheet mapping. The changes are different for each JIRA. So for eg. I want one JIRA to have Rag value R and the other to have G. Can I map the key id for JIRA and the corresponding field value and make a bulk edit using that excel ? Please help. Thanks in advance

Hi there,

You should be able to convert that excel sheet into a CSV file, and use the CSV File Import feature in Jira. This option is under the Jira Settings -> External System Import.

Although this feature is mainly used to import/create new issues, it could also be used to update existing Jira issues by specifying the Issue Key in the CSV file. You could refer to this documentation under Updating existing issues section for more detailed information on this.

A best practice would be to test this out on a newly created project first with some dummy Jira issues, to avoid unwanted/unexpected changes to your production project.

Hi @Suman, Shekhar

just to add to @Sadiq Satriya's great answer: If you are looking for a more interactive experience and are open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, you may want to have a look at the app that my team and I are working on, JXL for Jira.

JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting, and filtering by all your issue fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets. All editable fields can also be updated in bulk, via copy/paste. This works within JXL, but also between JXL and pretty much any other app, like so:

As you can see, this is super flexible - you really just want to pay attention that you are pasting into the right set of issues. This works for any number of issues in one go, so you should be done with your work in no time.

I should also add that JXL can do much more than the above: From support for configurable issue hierarchies, to issue grouping by any issue field(s), sum-ups, or conditional formatting.

Any questions just let me know,

Best,

Hannes
