I would like to link Project 1 with Project 2 (as a parent child relationship)?

Jatin Malhotra July 1, 2021

Hello Friends,

I would like to add Project 1 and Project 2 in JIRA. However, in order to maintain a relation (only at project level only and not at issue types linking e.g. EPIC to EPIC , Epic to Task ).

Is it possible? What are the steps involved?

Kind Regards,

Jatin

Projects cannot be “linked”. I’m unsure what your goal is here. Regardless projects stand-alone from each other. The only association that can be shared between projects are Things like workflows, schemes etc. and this is only for CMP projects.

Thank You. The aim was with Program Portfolio (consisting multiple projects running). I would like to chain the relevant projects so it makes it easy to backtrack the parent  (or else (Project 1) and the 7th inline projects.

If this is not possible then, all projects are individual entities and can only be link to  each other via Issue Types only.

I cannot imagine that, JIRA does not provide project id level linking/association.

Cheers,

Jatin

Not sure I fully understand your goal here. However maybe someone else that has some experience and ideas will chime in here.

Of course you can link issues between projects but assume you already know that.

I am a bit stuck too.  I don't understand what "chain projects" is for, nor "backtrack the project".  I don't have any guess at why a project link might be useful (I can see categorisation and shared configs have uses, but that's grouping, not linking)

Would it be possible to explain what you are trying to achieve?  Forget linking/chaining/backtracking details, could you tell us what you would like your data to be reporting back to you?

Hi Jatin, as far as I know you cannot have that hierarchy in Jira without plug ins. But If you want to collect several Projects under one "Program/ Portfolio" umbrella, you can use the Project categories to easily pull the projects together.

Hi @Anna-Carina Dummann ,
I would like to know more about this.

My scenario is there is a company-wide program, and multiple teams are working on it. We want individual teams to be able to create projects, and then epics in the way best suited to them, and then pull all these projects under a single program.

How do I do that?

Thanks!
Kashmira

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Forget about this "project linking" or "sub-projects", it's a dead-end.

For company-wide programmes, you should be looking at one of the scaling up apps.  Atlassian has Advanced Roadmaps for that, and Jira Align if you have a bigger set of programmes to manage (starting at 500 developers).

But you could also look at the other apps that provide higher layers - Big Picture, Easy Agile, Structure, and so on.

@Jatin Malhotra please do share your solution!

I do handle multiple projects and programs. And I keep track of them by linking them using Dependency type and view them using Jira structures. So that I can track of the deliverables from different project align to a initiative at program level. Or Project to project dependencies.

Thanks!

No problem - best thing to do is mark Jack's answer as correct, that will put most people off commenting more.

But that's, not the answer and I figured out myself. However, I appreciate colleagues responses.
