If an Assignee isn't assigned within an hour of ticket creation, Auto assign to the Reporter

Hi,

Problem: We have people creating Jira Issues but not assigning them to anyone, resulting in them getting lost. While we'd ideally have a nice 'pull' arrangement whereby unassigned tickets are pulled by Team members, we just aren't there yet so I'm going for the 'hot potato' approach.

What I want to do:

When an Issue is created, I'd like to give the Reporter an hour's grace to assign the Issue, after which the Issue is automatically assigned to the Reporter.

I'm a relative Jira newbie so please speak loudly and slowly :)

You can use Jira's automation rules to automatically assign an issue to the reporter after a certain amount of time. You can set up a rule to assign the issue to the reporter after an hour by using the "For issues moving to" dropdown to select the status or column that updates the issue's assignee field, and then nominating the reporter in the "Assign to" dropdown.

Hi @Adam Taylor there are several solutions possible:

  • Make the Assignee field required for the used issue type (f.e. Task or Story) via the Field Configuration which is part of the Field Configuration Scheme associated with the project
  • Add a validator to the Create transition and make the Assignee Field required
  • Assign the issue by default to the reporter via an automation rule.

Granting a grace period of an hour seems a possible solution, but one would rather motivate or enforce reporters to select an Assignee upon creation of the issue.
