Initiative/Feature report

Sorin Julman July 20, 2023

Hi,

I'd like to know if there is an option to run/create a report that would show the hierarchy of the project's content, which in my case would be:

Initiative(s) --- > Feature(s) ---- > Epic(s) --- > Stories

It's easy to see the stories in each epic or epics in each feature or features in initiative.
But can I (and if yes, how) see the whole picture/report at once?

Also - if possible - how can I see that a certain Feature is for example x% done (either # of stories or story points)?

TIA

Hi @Sorin Julman , are you using Standard Jira Software or Premium version?

By default, Jira only supports a 3-level hierarchy which is Epic -> Story -> Sub-task. You can consider a few options to customize the hierarchies:

- Get Jira Premium which comes with Advanced Roadmaps - it lets you add new levels above Epic, in your case, adding Initiative and Feature levels. Then you can visualize the rollup progress on a timeline.

- Get third-party add-on from the Marketplace, many apps can address your need: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/search?query=hierarchy

Natively, it's also possible to get an Epic percentage done via JQL "work ratio" field, you can generate a filter that displays the work progress for reporting:

Hi Linh,

Thanks a lot for the reply. and suggestions.

I'm working with Enterprise Jira - and I see I do have the Advanced Roadmaps option.
I'm playing right now with this and it really looks promising!

Thanks
Sorin

Hi @Sorin Julman

I’m Charlotte, a support engineer at Appfire and I’m here to help you.

Unfortunately, using JQL of Jira, you’ll not be able to do it dynamically.

In the app where my team works, JQL Search Extensions for Jira, you can use this query find all initiatives, features, epics and stories:

issue in childrenOfIssuesInQueryRecursive("project=ABC and type=Initiative") OR issue in parentsOfIssuesInQuery("project=ABC and type=Feature")

Please contact our support if you have any other questions about this query.

We’ll be happy to help you!

Best regards,

Charlotte

Hi @Sorin Julman,

Yes, this is possible with our Great Gadgets app.  One of the many gadgets that this app offers is the Work Break-down Structure (WBS) gadget that displays the issues from a filter by their hierarchy (Initiative Level 1 > Initiative Level 2 >...  > Epic > Stories > Sub-Tasks) along with their status.

Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Gadget

So all you have to do is to create a Jira filter that returns the issues to be groupped, and then add this gadget to your Jira dashboard and configure it to use the filter.

This app offers many other gadgets that you will find useful.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact support@stonikbyte.com.

Thank you,

Hi Danut,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm working however with Enterprise Jira and managed by our administrators - can't really install something myself.

Cheers,
Sorin
