Integrating Jira with SolidWorks PDM or Autodesk Vault

Nikolay May 22, 2024

Hello!

I am looking for ideas and examples on integrating Jira with a PDM solution (SolidWorks PDM, Autodesk Vault or similar)

The goal is to establish a change management workflow via change requests (CRs) and change orders (COs) and avoid manual sync between Jira and the PDM system.

This question was asked at least a couple times before and those threads didn't end up in any reference to a ready-made solution. I wonder how this task is being addressed at all.

Thanks in advance!

Ok, you will need to write something in Jira that can remotely edit the PDM objects, and write something in your PDM system that can make REST calls to Jira to update issues when it needs to.

I'm not aware of anyone doing this as an app before - all the times I've seen something similar, it's been coding the desired processes tailored to the system in use.

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

What are you looking for from an "integration" here?  Jira is not a version control system, but it is an issue tracker, so you could use Jira for change management, and have it refer to versions of your PDM objects, but I am not clear on if that is the actual need that you have.

Could you explain a bit more?

Are you still working on this?

I wonder why no such solution exists. Lots of teams in manufacturing are using Jira, yet no out of the box integration.

Hello Nic, thank you for the reply!

The issues in Jira indeed have references to the assets in PLM. The assets in PLM apparently may have references to the change requests in Jira if someone bothers to add those references.

What I am looking for is to let these data be in sync without manual copy-pasting. IOW, if there's a change request in Jira that is related to a particular 3D model/assembly in PDM, I'd like that change request to be auto-updated whenever the assembly is updated. Ideally, if the model is changed in PLM, I would be able to check and close the issue from Jira without going elsewhere.

Hope this makes sense.
