Is it feasible to create a User Story with Zero Story Points?

Maridhasan Murugesan May 21, 2024

Hi,

I'm interested in drafting some user stories that essentially address technical debt and can be resolved alongside completion of other stories. For these technical debt tasks, I'd like to assign them zero story points as an estimate. Does Jira permit the creation of user stories with zero story points?

Hi @Maridhasan Murugesan ,

Yep, it is feasible to create a User Story with zero story points in Jira.

Here's how you can do it:

Create a New User Story:

  • Navigate to the project where you want to create the user story.
  • Click on the "Create" button to open the issue creation form.
  • Select "User Story" as the issue type.

Assign Zero Story Points:

  • In the issue creation form, locate the "Story Points" field. If you don't see it, you might need to customize your issue screen to include it.
  • Enter 0 in the "Story Points" field.

Save the User Story:

  • Fill in the other required fields (like summary, description, etc.).
  • Click "Create" to save the user story with zero story points.

Let me know if that works (hopefully it does)
