Is it possible for 1 epic to belong more than 1 initiatives?

Lucia Sugianto July 18, 2019

We have created a customized issue type Initiative which is higher level than epic. So 1 or more epic can have 1 parent (initiatives).

However there is a requirement where an epic will belong to more than 1 initiatives, is that possible?

Hi @Lucia Sugianto

In Jira Portfolio it's only possible to have one parent - so in your case, an Epic can only have one Parent Initiative, not multiple.

If you were to have a multi-to-multi relationship, you'd need to use Issue Links. You could name a link type of 'is parent of' and 'is child of' to show multiple parents and children, but this wouldn't work in Portfolio or any other hierarchical reporting - as they're still just Issue Links (i.e sibling relationship).

Hi,

In my setup I have:

EpicA -> Initiative 1 (via parent link)

Then, through Initiative 2 (child link) option, I added same Epic A to this different initiative.

I see now Epic belongs to 2 different Initiative (A, B in this example), former via parent link and latter via Issues - is a child of (Initiative B).

Can someone pls explain the behavior here ?

Thanks !
