Is it possible to configure JIRA to not prepend a string to the beginning of the subject line of every email?

We are migrating from Lotus Notes to JIRA for our workflow system, and Lotus is able to send an email to CA Unincenter to have it open a request to another group (who isnt migrating to JIRA yet).  The problem is CA uses the subject line to trigger the action.  That group doesnt want to update their system at all, so we would need to match our subject line exactly.  JIRA requires a prepended string for the subject line in the SMTP config, which breaks this.  And no, you cant leave it null or put a space in there.

We are using the Script Runner plugin to send the customized email, but it cant override this "feature"

We have the same problem with this "feature". Using JEMH for sending support status mails - which come with their own subject line. But still JIRA adds its prefix. We added 2 spaces as "prefix" but this looks stupid.

How can the prefix function be disabled? It should be optional anyway...

You can turn off the native mail functionality in the Notification Scheme

not sure what you are referring to.  Turning off the email altogether in the scheme?    The setting that I am talking about is the Email prefix in the SMTP config.

This is if you don't want to use the native JIRA email functionality and will just use the custom mail from the script add on.

the script still sends through the built in SMTP server, which is where there setting is applied.
