Is it possible to estimate User Stories in JIRA in story points and in hours at the same time?

Olga Avonrims September 11, 2018

Hi! Thanks in advance for reading this message!

I'll try to explain the reason of this question: we have two teams - dev team and product team, previously we're using two different tools for the project management (Jira for product team and Assembla for Dev team). Now we are thinking about use Jira altogether.

We run sprint refinement sessions in Jira where we used Story points to estimate the User stories and once we know the scope estimation we duplicated these User stories in Assembla where our dev team estimated User stories and Sub-tasks in hours. It is essential to have the reports in hours and in story points at the same time: dev team needs to know how many hours they spend on each of the user story and sub-task, product team works with story points.

As far as I know in JIRA if we set up the User Stories estimation in story points, we can't see the reports in hours. Is there the way to switch between hours and story points for the User Stories and keep them both?

And the next question is if I set up User Stories estimation in story points and use hours to estimate the subtask, will I see the total hours spent on subtasks for the specific User Story?

Kindest regards,

Olga

Hi @Olga Avonrims

The Story points and hours are stored in the *Story Points* and *Time Tracking* fields fields respectively. You could add both fields to the Jira issue to check both.

However, the reports are based on the set estimation statistics. Therefore you could specify the values in both fields, however, if you want to view the reports in the from Story points to Original Estimate, then you may simply change the configuration from the board and then you should see that the reports now use the other field. So you will have to keep switching based on what you would like to see on the report.

With regards to the second question, yes, this would add up to the Parent Story. Therefore in your case, as the parent doesn't have Original Estimate then this would just be the child's estimates displayed there. The Story points of the Parent would be shown on the Story point field.

@Mohamed Riza sorry, for the disturbing trying to configure how to add both fields  Time Tracking and Story points to the issue. How it should look like on issue layout?

I mean I can estimate the User story in Story points, can set up the time tracking. But I can't figure out how to add the estimation for the issue in Story points and Hours at the same time
