We're currently moving to JIRA Cloud from JIRA Server. I've started making some configurations for the new boards, but then realized that when the existing projects and settings from JIRA Server is imported, all the existing stuff on JIRA Cloud will get wiped.
1. Is this true?
2. What's the recommended approach?
Thanks for all the suggestions. I see it as 2 options right now:
1. Rebuild a new service desk in JIRA Server, then import everything to JIRA Cloud
2. Import JIRA Server to JIRA cloud, then manually build the new service desk
Most likely, I'll go with the first option...
Hello,
The only way is to take a backup for Server, then install this backup on a temporary Jira Server, then import a project to this temporary Jira Server, then take the temporary server backup and import this backup back to Cloud. This procedure should be performed carefully, because there is a huge possibility of data loss.
Or you can create manually configuration of the desired project in Jira Cloud and then use csv import to import issues.

1. Yes it is
2. There is a plugin that will import projects. I don't know if it is available for cloud. Search the marketplace for project import. I don't remember the name, but know the two JIRA instances must be the same version.

we want to combine two existing service desks into a single service desk. Should I just create a new service desk on the JIRA Server then import it over with rest of the stuff?

I've never imported a project. I suggest you look at the documentation for the plugin and verify you can use it in your cloud instance. Without the plugin, importing will overwrite ALL existing data in the database.

I'll look at the plug-ins but at this point, I'm leaning towards just re-creating it on the JIRA Server. JIRA Cloud instance is close to fresh and can be wiped anytime for us.

You can export to excel any current issues and import them after the server import is done. You'll lose comments, but the other data will be there.

Hey Everyone, just wanted to do a recap on my JIRA migration from server to cloud.
Long story short, I ended up going with option 1 (rebuild a new service desk in JIRA service then migrate), but ran into sleuth of issues regarding attachments, users, etc. However, our new JIRA is up and running on Cloud now!
I Will be doing a separate post on my migration experience and the troubleshooting I went through... While that's still in progress, are there any questions I can help with regarding JIRA migration from server to cloud?
