Is it possible to sum up story points across epics?

At the epic level we assign story points to determine the amount of work a given project will be. The hope is to be able to report on that field and sum it up to cross-reference with assignee. This will allow us to manage the team's bandwidth easier. I know you can sum up story points within an epic based on issue types at the lower hierarchies, but we want to sum them up across epics. I.e. John Doe is currently assigned to issues totaling 15 story points vs. Jane Doe is currently assigned to issues totaling 25 story points. This would be much more accurate to report on than just total number of epics that they are assigned since our epics have a wide range of how much time they take to work through. 

Has anyone had success doing this or something similar?

The app shows your hierarchy in a tree format and  provides sum up at each level for time estimates and story points to track your project progress.

As far as I know this is not possible with the Jira's default gadget or reports.

But it can be easily done by using the Pivot Table & Pivot Chart gadget offered by our Great Gadgets app. With this gadget you can easily create multi-dimensional tables and charts with sums, counts, percentages.

if you're open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, you may want to have a look at the app that my team and I are working on, JXL for Jira.

JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting, and filtering by all your issue fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets. It also comes with a number of advanced features, including support for (configurable) issue hierarchies, issue grouping by any issue field(s), sum-ups, or conditional formatting.

With these, you can build a view like e.g. this in just a couple of clicks:

Note how the story points sum-up updates in real time as you enter the data. (This is really just one of a virtually endless number of reports and views - you can also view and sum up any other issue fields, configure different sum-up styles, etc. etc.)

@Greg Mihailides Once you have identified the relevant epics, you can use JQL to extract the story points from the issues within those epics. This may involve querying for all the issues (tasks, stories, etc.) within each epic and summing up their story points .After extracting the story points from each epic, you can aggregate them to calculate the total story points assigned to each team member. This may involve using reporting tools or custom scripts to perform the aggregation and calculation.Once you have aggregated the story points, you can generate reports or visualizations to present the data in a meaningful way

@Greg Mihailides Once you've extracted the story points for each epic, you can aggregate them in various ways depending on your specific requirements and preferences example the simplest approach is to sum up the story points for each team member across all the epics they are assigned to. This provides a total count of story points assigned to each individual , also assign different weights to story points based on their priority, Calculate the average number of story points per epic for each team member or Calculate the percentage of total story points assigned to each team member relative to the overall total

you can do based on ur customized requirements.
