Is there any way to change what status children of Epics get created to?

We are using roadmap and backlog in our next gen project which is great, however I'm finding that if I add a child to an epic from the epic, it automatically puts the child in To Do instead of backlog. Has anyone found a way to correct this? I know I can create my issue and then add it to an Epic, however I would love to be able to use the existing create child feature.

On another pass, it looks like I am entirely incorrect and they do get created into the Backlog. Not sure what happened before posting this.
