we're manually switching issue statuses,
when trying to "complete" a sprint - the prompt message says;
"the sprint contains open issues"
we didn't encounter this problem before, and we can't figure out what we did to cause this issue.
has anyone successfully dealt with this?

Are you sure the issue is in the last column on the board? Are there any open Sub-tasks under the issue?
