Issue type 'Sub-task' missing in Team Managed Software Project

anurag pandey October 19, 2021

I am an administrator of a new instance of a 'Team Managed Software Project'. When I go to 'Project Settings/issues' to add the issue type 'Sub-task' I don't see an option of including a pre-defined issue type 'Sub-task' & if I add a new issue type 'Sub-task' it shows up at the level of other standard issues (Story,Tasks, etc) rather than appearing as the last layer (i.e. 3rd layer after Epic/1st-Layer AND Standard Issues/2nd-Layer).

Please advise!

I need Sub-task issue type with standard functionalities.

Thanks,

AP

Ok, so your second screenshot tells us everything we need to know!

The shot with "project settings" at the top, then listing:

  • Capability (slightly cut off due to scrolling)
  • <some other types>
  • Story
  • Task
  • ------
  • Enabler
  • + add issue type
  • You're in a team-managed project

It's the last four lines that say it:

Team-managed projects only support a single sub-task, you can't have many types of sub-task.

In this screenshot, note the line between Task and Enabler - that line is dividing issue-level types from sub-tasks, and Enabler is the sub-task type you've already added to this project.

Because you've got Enabler, and you're in a team-managed project, you can't add any more sub-task types.

Thanks a lot @Nic Brough -Adaptavist-

You nailed it.

So I'll have to remove 'enabler' and add Sub-task as a new issue level type (labeled Sub-task).

gotcha  :o)

Actually, no, you can just go into the "Enabler" and re-name it (click on the name at the top to edit it, and the icon if you want to select a new one)

yep yep...I din't mean to do it sequentially and delete the issue-level types lol :o)

Changing the name is what I plan to do.

Thanks a lot my friend! @Nic Brough -Adaptavist-

Hi @anurag pandey

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!!!

I guess you haven't enable the sub- task in Jira.

How to enable or disable sub-task issue types

Sub-tasks are enabled by default. Note that you can't disable sub-tasks if one or more sub-tasks have already been created in one of your Jira applications.

You can convert these sub-tasks to standard issue types if you would like to disable them.

Select > Issues.

Under ISSUE TYPES, select Sub-tasks.

Click Enable or Disable sub-tasks as needed.

How to create a sub-task issue type

Select > Issues.

Under ISSUE TYPES, select Sub-tasks.

Click Add sub-task issue type.

Enter a name and description to define the new sub-task issue type.

Click Add.

Here is the link Please go though this.

Cheers,

Mayur

Thanks for replying Mayur.

The sub-task is already enabled for my project. Infact, there is already an issue type labeled 'enabler' present at the sub-task level.

I need another issue type (at sub-task) level called 'sub-task' so that when I create a child in a 'task' then the option to create a sub-task is available.

Additional Info:

If I go to Global Setting/Issue Type Scheme, I don't see my project being explicitly associated with a 'Issue Type Scheme'. I am assuming my project is inheriting from the default 'Issue Type Scheme' and 'sub-task' is available in the default scheme.

Hi @anurag pandey

As you have already mentioned above that you are using team managed project so it will not take any issue type scheme. Because ideally team managed project doesn't support shared configuration.

Got It. Thanks.

My problem with not having an issue type sub-task still remains though :(
