I am trying to sort a series of JIRA plan board in the timeline view based off the status attribute of issues on the board. The only means to sort of this field appears to be alphabetically asc or desc.

Instead, I would like to order the board based off the logical flow of the statuses.

i.e.

Statuses could be Open, In-progress, Closed

Ideally sorted in the order above. Alphabetical instead would sort as Closed, In-Progess, Open (or the inverse).

Hi @paul_marsh and welcome to the Community!

I have been playing around a bit in a test site to see what happens when sorting by status. I do have the impression the sorting does respect the sequence of statuses. But it does take some interpretation.

From what I see:

  • Ordering by status does seem to respect status category. In ascending order, it lists To Do statuses first, then In Progress and finally Done. These are represented by the colors grey / blue / green.
  • If you have multiple statuses of the same category, it does indeed sort those alphabetically within their category.
  • Finally, the sorting seems to also work within each hierarchy level separately. So Epics are sorted against other epics and stories are sorted within their respective parent epics next, by means of an example.

Hope this helps!
