I didnt see an option for this but wanted to know if it was possible. Can you assign a different workflow then the parent ticket scheme for the child or sub tickets in JIRA?

Yes, sub-tasks are seen as issue types, and "workflow schemes" allow you to say things like "use workflow X for issue type A, use workflow Y for issue type B, and use workflow Z for all the other issue types"

How do I go about linking the sub task workflow with the subtask? I took a look in the issue types and couldnt find a way to attached it to just the subtasks. Sorry I'm new.

Look for "workflow scheme" in the administration screens. Create a new one, that includes your "subtask X uses workflow Y" and associate it with the project.

Thanks Nic, that worked! I was able to associate the sub tasks with the workflow.
