I apologize if this might be a repeated question, but we are currently looking through the upgrade process and want to know which path is the easiest to take.
We currently have installed:
JIRA v4.2.3 with the 10 user license
Greenhopper v5.4.1 with the 10 user license
We just purchsed the 25 user upgrade for both and want to bring each up to date with the latest stable release which is JIRA v4.4 and GreenHopper v5.8.5.
So my question:
Is it easier to apply the update to our current instance and have to reconfigure for all of the changes and migrations listed in the long documentation?
Or would it be easier to install a fresh new instance with our 25 user license and do a data export from the old instance into the new? I am not sure if this is a completly possible option, but thats what I am trying to figure out so I can document the process.
Thanks
@Rwyland
I believe you do not have a large instance, and if you do not have a lot of customizations, both processes should go fairly smooth.
I would follow the following steps :
Thanks @Ruchi, you are right that our instace is small. At what time should I apply the new new license to both JIRA and Greenhopper? I am guessing during the installation of the new JIRA? I also assume that I can install GreenHopper at that time as well?
Also one other question, my configuration with LDAP would be migrated over during step 4 in the ouser.xml?
Thanks!

To make sure you have the easiest migration make sure that you upgrade/input your license first. Then when you bring over the backup and do a restore to the new install it will come over.

In my past experiance I would do the following:
It has been a while since I upgraded from v4.2, but from what I am seeing you have for users I am guessing you a fairly small install. Although updating from v4.2 doesn't have the slick updater created in v4.3, using the backup and restore method (manual method) seems a lot worse then it really is. The restore will bring over the majority of your settings except in config files, which you will need to migrate manually.

Thanks Jeremy, we do have a smaller scale install, only about 1500 tickets in our system. Atlassian support also recommended this method when I contacted them so I will look through the documentation. The only thing I am worreid about is the length of the process, but I hear it is quite small.
