JIRA evaluation install environment question.

We are installing JIRA for evaluation purposes.  What is the recommended environment to run the installer for JIRA - on the database server or on a web server?  In the end if we move this to a production environment, what is the recommended configuration?

We are running both test and production JIRA instances on same (hosted) physical server. Database is on same server as well. About 500 users and 100,000 issues in the system.

Has some advantages (reduces maintenance needs, only one server to backup, etc) and some challenges (shared IP, differentiate by port which is not always supported by integration add-ons).

Overall, I would say that it depends so much on your environment that you would need to discuss your 'personal' details with an implementation expert.

Neither, or either really.

The installer installs JIRA.  It doesn't care if there are other services running on your server.  It's quite common to see people put JIRA + Database + Web Server on the same machine (usually if it's an internal server), and simply call it "the JIRA machine". It's just as common to have JIRA + Database on one machine and a proxy web-server on a separate machine exposed to the internet.  And a lot of us run JIRA on one machine, Database on a second and the web-server on the third.

The basic recommendation is dependent on size, what machines you have available and your desired architecture.  "The JIRA machine" works fine for small systems, but a large JIRA one an underpowered machine can lead to all sorts of "fun".

But, don't panic about getting it right first time!  It's not that hard to move it around later.
