Jira backlog board is not adding sub-task time estimate into the sprint totals

Salenta_Baisden-wm December 7, 2024

In the backlog board the grey (not started)/ blue (in progress)/ green (completed) Sprint total is not showing sub-task estimates. Is this a bug? Why can we assign time to the sub-task if we are not going to see the values in the sprint totals? Why can we assign sub-tasks to different people if we are not going to see those estimates in their Sprint totals? Is there a setting to turn on adding in the sub-tasks. This does not work for story points nor for custom time fields.

Hi @Salenta_Baisden-wm

Welcome to our Community.

Yes, the current "Workload by assignee" report doesn't include time estimates, which is not a bug. What you're expecting is a new function point to Jira product. I think you could raise a ticket to Atlassian support to request this feature.

If this is key function to your team, maybe you could have a try of Jira Apps like Sprint Reviewer Pro as follows:

Hope it helps & Thanks,

I am not looking for current work by assignee. I am looking at the overall totals on the backlog sprint planning board. Why is the overall total missing the sub-task values.Screenshot 2024-12-08 at 8.26.40 PM.png

plze see Shabeer Ahmed's comment for the reason

We have to option to create a separate task if the sub-task is separate from the parent issue. You are rationalizing the way the Atlassian supplied view works. I can see the correct total on a Structure Board. Please, see my response to Shabeer Ahmed.

Hi @Salenta_Baisden-wm ,

On top of what @YY Brother said, here's a feature suggestion that I think, fits what you've described: JSWCLOUD-15991: Take into Account sub-tasks when calculating the Workload by Assignee

Cheers,
Tom

Why does the Jira backlog sprint planning board totals not take into account the sub-task values? Is that a bug? Screenshot 2024-12-08 at 8.26.40 PM.png

I believe so (even if you enable including sub-tasks in estimations). Here's one reported Bug that might be relevant: JSWCLOUD-26713: Enabling the 'Include Sub-task in estimations' does not change the estimated time in the planning information.

How do these tickets get prioritized? Clearly this is a bug.

For bugs, I would say it depends on the priority and the impact.

As for the suggestions/features, it's usually based on the number of votes and internal revision that Atlassian team makes + weight, complexity and everything else that counts when determining what will be selected for development.

Hi @Salenta_Baisden-wm ,

Unfortunately there's no setting to enable the sum-up of Subtasks estimates you're looking for in Jira Cloud. If I understand your final goal properly, you'd like to be able to view and aggregated number of hours per Sprint per user to understand their capacity.

If that's the case, you can evaluate a Workload per Sprint (WPS) report from the app we've built: Report Hub - Custom Charts, Reports & Timesheets for Jira

Here's a quick preview of WBS and WPS reports I think might be a good fit due to aggregating estimates (hours & story points as well as other numeric values) and highlighting overloaded / underloaded team members:

Hope this helps
