Hello,

we are keen to know if there is any real restriction/issue with following situation:

Integration: Jira Cloud and Bitbucket on-prem (server) - Will this work please?

Is there anybody who has real experience?

Thanks for all replies.

Martina

@Martina Piecková hi. I see that there are some possibilities to explore to achieve this. I'd like to add just another solution you might want to look at - ZigiOps (see it on the Atlassian marketplace). It's a fully no-code integration platform that can help you connect Jira/Bitbucket. None of the data will be stored, you can tweak it t fit different use case scenarios. Do not hesitate to check it out - even try it via the free trial.

Hi @Martina Piecková

Yes, Jira Cloud can be integrated with Bitbucket Server (on-prem), but with some caveats.

  • Compatibility: Since Jira Cloud and Bitbucket Server are different platforms, integration typically requires a plugin or custom API setup—native support may be limited.
  • Data Sync: Bi-directional sync is important to reflect changes (like commits or branches) across both systems.
  • Security: Secure communication is critical. Use OAuth or secure APIs to avoid exposing internal Bitbucket resources.
  • Reliability: Hybrid integrations need ongoing monitoring to stay reliable, especially as either system gets updated

Here are some popular use cases:

  • Better Traceability: Link commits, branches, and pull requests in Bitbucket to Jira issues for full visibility from code to requirement.
  • Workflow Automation: Auto-transition Jira issues based on Bitbucket actions (e.g., branch created, PR merged), reducing manual updates.
  • Smarter Releases: Track deployment status, generate changelogs, and manage release scope by syncing Bitbucket activity with Jira.

While simple integrations can serve basic needs, many teams eventually find they require more comprehensive, stable, and deeply integrated solutions for critical workflows. If you're looking beyond basic syncing for long-term reliability and advanced capabilities, a structured integration platform becomes essential.

For instance, OpsHub Integration Manager (OIM), an Atlassian Solutions Partner, offers a robust framework built for this purpose. It can help you with:

  • Enabling bi-directional, field-level sync between Jira and Bitbucket
  • Syncing issues, comments, custom fields, and commit metadata without plugins
  • Handling formatting differences, conflict resolution, retries, and audit logs automatically
  • Working across cloud and on-prem environments securely—without exposing internal systems

It’s a good option if you want to avoid manual error handling or constant maintenance and just have both systems stay aligned reliably.

Hope it helps!
