Jira data center doesnt seem to allow modifying fields from backlog view

Joshua Temple June 10, 2025

We just migrated from jira cloud to jira data center.

In jira cloud, when we're in the backlog view, we could modify story points inline while in the backlog.

Now that we're in data center, the backlog view just gives us the ability to click and drag issues around. The story points field is there, but hovering over story points just gives the cross to drag the whole issue. Our only way to modify story points now is to click the issue to open it on the right, and modify inside the issue.

These extra clicks may seem small, but it's slowing us down during planning sessions when we're updating loads of tickets. Any way to change this behavior?

I've done a fair bit of research, but each articles/forums I find just just says how to add/remove the field and add/remove permissions, not how to make the field modifiable while in the backlog view.

Hi @Joshua Temple,

Since Atlassian decided to go all in on cloud, the former server and data center offerings have not moved very much in terms of functionality. Investments in the product have mainly gone into (technical) stability and performance, while the cloud platform in comparison has evolved light years forward (having its own struggles and pains along the way as well, of course). Honestly, that is not very likely to change, as the investments into innovation are really going into the cloud platform.

I am sure you had your reasons to move to data center, but coming from cloud, I am afraid you will run into more of these 'I have a feeling that I could do more back in cloud' - moments.

I am aware that does not change your experience for the better, but it is - alas - a reality.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the fast response! Sounds like this is probably one of many times we'll just have to deal with a weird issue. It was a company-wide decision to move to on-prem.

I'm a bit surprised Atlassian is prioritizing cloud over data center so hard since they already stopped supporting server; data center costs a small fortune, so I'd normally expect more support.

But as you said, it is what it is. Thanks again for the response.

Hi @Joshua Temple

just adding to @Walter Buggenhout's great answer above: If you're open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, there's a number of apps available that bring Cloud capabilities (and even more than that) into Data Center.

E.g., for your specific use case, you may want to have a look at the app that my team and I are working on: JXL for Jira.

JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting, and filtering by all your issue fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets. This is how it looks in action:

story-point-sum-up.gif

This is really just one of a virtually endless number of possible views and reports; you can also easily view your issues in a ranked list grouped by sprint, and this way build a "supercharged", fully inline-editable backlog view.

Any questions just let me know,

Best,

Hannes
