Hi We are using the standard Jira workflow out of the box. We have an item in reopened and the workflow status only shows Closed and Resolved as options. However the workflow diagram shows in progress as a valid status.

We are not able to put in in IN Progress.

Any ideas?

Your user needs to be the assignee to use "start progress". Either reassign it, or ask the assignee (or edit your workflow, of course!)

Or there is a validator which doesn't allow to start progress based on criteria such as group/role/..

mmm, PaCo - there is no "Or" here - the *standard* workflow *has* a validator that says "assignee only"
