Limit the creation of next gen projects

Michael Galper September 4, 2020

Hi All, I am looking for a way to lock down the creation of Next Gen projects.  As a company we decided to only use the Classic project (needed to use granular permissions available in Schema's).  I removed all groups from Global settings to Next Gen and I am aware that Jira Admins can still create them.

Now to the question/issue - Is there a way to allow users (i.e. Project Managers) to create Classic project as a default with out seeing the options to create a Next Gen project.

I also tried creating a Project Manager Group, added it to a user and changed their access to Trusted, they had access to create a Next Gen project.

Thanks, Mike

Hi @Michael Galper

Yes there is!

Settings cog (top right)

System

Global Permissions

Under 'create next-gen projects' you can delete the 'jira-software-users' group and add the group in for the users you want to create next-gen projects

Hope this helps šŸ‘

Apologies - I misread your question. You have of course already done this and Sramanth is absolutely correct. You would need to add your project managers to the 'Administer Jira' which gives them access to change a lot of settings.

At my company we only let a small number of people who have had training administer Jira. This also keeps the number of new projects down as a request needs to be submitted through our internal Jira service desk and approved.

Hi @Michael Galper To allow users to create Classic projects you might have to add them to Administer Jira global permissions (which is a dangerous thing to do). This specific permission type would allow users to perform all the administration tasks (except managing users).

However, there is a specific global permission type called "create next-gen projects" which can let you limit the creation of projects (next-gen type) by granting access only to the groups you add.

Hi Sramanth,  Thank you for the assistance.  Unfortunately, from what I have tested and read on the Next-Gen project is even if I remove all access through the Global settings a Jira Admin will be able to create them.

I think we will need to take the route of creating different Schema's with the appropriate access and add the Groups appropriately to the Permissions in the schema.

Thanks, Mike
