Long term resource planning in Jira

Phaik Ean Wong May 23, 2018

Hi All,

I would like to get insight how is the other companies are doing a full year resource planning for the team?

It would be great if you can share with me about your experience of resource planning using Jira. Other than looking for a resource planning tool, it would be great if you can share with me about the process as well.

Currently, we are using Access Database to allow team member to plan their activity (project, task, vacation, training) for whole year and estimate resource for each task.

Then, this data is being exported and put in excel to generate a graphical view in bar chart or pie chart.

Thanks

Ean

This is usually best done in Confluence. You can manage a calendar and see who is on vacation, etc.

Here's the ideal setup of you confluence. Each team has a Space dedicated to them with a calendar managed by them. They can log events, holidays, vacation leaves, sick leaves, etc. This calendar should be visible to all.

If you want to see workload allocation, I would suggest using JIRA instead. It can track hours so you'll get a much more accurate view of things.

Basically, JIRA is for work schedules (per issue/ticket/case) and Confluence for calendars. HR can even use it for company events so that everyone is aware.
