Markdown support 2023 for Jira Cloud

We have a number of templates we have created over the years in text files that we used to be able to copy and paste into Jira Cloud.

It now seems as if none of the Markdown works and we can no longer build properly formatted templates and store them in text files.

Was this by design?  If yes, what was the reason for this change?

Additionally, where do I find a list of acceptable tags for this forum?  The site will not allow me to use "markdown" as a tag.

Hey! I know this thread is a bit old, but as of 2025, Markdown is still not fully supported in Jira Cloud's text fields, which makes workflows like yours a real challenge.

If you're looking for a way to preserve and display Markdown-based templates, a good workaround is to store them in Confluence using an app like Just Add+. It lets you:

  • Embed and render Markdown, HTML, and code blocks in Confluence pages
  • Pull from GitHub, Bitbucket, Git repos, or raw Markdown files
  • Display formatted content and diagrams like Mermaid, PlantUML, and more

It’s especially helpful if your team is using both Jira and Confluence — you can link to a fully rendered Markdown doc right from your Jira ticket.

Hey, @Darrell Porter

My team developed a plugin that works for Cloud or Data Center that could help you: Alt Text Editor.

Here's some of the highlights:

  • Leverage all the capabilities of markdown to edit Confluence content (CommonMark)
  • Preview your changes as you make them, agnostic of format
  • Not a macro!

Hope this can be helpful!
