The move funcatinality is only setup to work between projects and between stories within the same project. If I want to move a number of sub tasks from a task to a story within the same project the only way I have found is:

- convert to issue

- convert to sub-task and select the new story to be parent

This can't be done via bulk edit and so has to be done manually for each task.

Is there a smater way?

This cannot be done and should be added at some point. I have added the feature request - https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-27149

I can't help you with the volume question, but changing the parent of an issue doesn't involve changing issue type.

Go to a sub-task, and "move" it. You'll be asked for project and *parent*. Leave project alone and choose the new parent issue.

Just came back to comment. The one I was changing was a task not a story (clarified above). So to move sub tasks between a task and a story, one can convert the former to a story first and then do as you describe as an alternative to the method I described

+1 I was able to move a sub-task to another task (as a subtask) by using the Move option and assigning the sub-task to the new Parent.

A sub-task can be moved between any parent type (standard issuetype) that exists in the project's Issue Type Scheme. So, yes, a sub-task may be moved between Story, Task, or other issuetype of your project.

It does not work as you describe in 4.2.2 for task to story

We are using Jira 4.3 and cannot bulk move a sub-task within a project, only to move it out. However, if you go to the current parent, locate the sub-task in the Sub-Tasks section, then select the individual sub-task to move from there. You will see the Change Parent selection here.
