Multiple hierarchy level in JIRA cloud on standard plan

Aakash Khurana January 13, 2025

Currently we are on Standard plan. But looking to have the only feature of creating our custom hierarchy as per our line of business.

The premium plan is expensive for us right now and even 3rd party applications is a NO at this time.

We tried using Sub tasks as level 3 but it has a lot of restrictions/complications like moving subtask to a new sprint(which is not possible), estimate of a subtask in total sprint(which is not a recommended approach by JIRA/Atlassian)

So looking out for something

Hi @Aakash Khurana

welcome to the community!

If Jira Premium is not an option for you, I would recommend to look into one of the hierarchy-focused apps on the Atlassian Marketplace.

E.g., I think you'd like the app that my team and I are working on, JXL for Jira.

JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting, and filtering by all your issue fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets. It also comes with a number of advanced features, including support for (configurable) issue hierarchies. These issue hierarchies can be based on Jira's built-in parent/child relationships (like task/sub-task, or epic/story), and/or based on issue links of configurable issue link types, and/or based-on issue field values.

This is how this looks in action for a 5-level hierarchy. You can model as many hierarchy levels as you want:

Issue hierarchies also play well with JXL's other advanced features, such as sum-ups, conditional formatting, or inline bulk editing via copy/paste.

Any questions just let me know,

Best,

Hannes

Hi @Aakash Khuranawelcome to the community!

It's Standard Jira limitations and it might be tricky to create a custom hierarchy in Jira without upgrading to the Premium plan or using 3rd party applications. And while you've mentioned complications with using sub-tasks due to restrictions, they can still serve as a temporary solution for lower-level tasks within your current structure.

By the way, are you considering free 3rd party apps? Smart Issue Hierarchy can help you to visualise and structure your Jira hierarchy and it's completely free.

Hope it helps!

Hi @Aakash Khurana Welcome to the community!

In Standard Jira, you are limited to Epic -> Task/Story -> Sub-task. You can consider: Advanced Cloud, Structure, or Portfolio.

Hi @Aakash Khurana

Welcome to the community !!

I see that you mentioned no to 3rd party apps. But in future if you change your mind to try out a mktplace app for this requirement, do take a look at

Issue Hierarchy

The app allows you to create a hierarchy based on your issue links. The app has multiple features as below :

- Sum up values to see overall progress for your Issue Hierarchy

- View the full hierarchy of linked issues, Portfolio/Advanced Roadmaps, Epics, and Subtasks

- Apply filters to put the focus on the relevant data only

- Excel like editing for all the values right on the report and see real time progress updates

- Export to a CSV file

- Embedded Epic Hierarchy on Issue Screen

- Dashboard Gadgets

- Gantt / Timeline Views

(Disclaimer: I work for RVS, the vendor for this app)

Hi @Aakash Khurana ,

You can check the app we develop called Pivot Report. It support custom hierarchy based on issue links:

This hierarchy/structure view is available as a standalone report, but also you can get as a Dashboard gadget or integrate directly into the Issue View.

You can check the demo report here or schedule a quick call with me to go over the app.
